Give the people the power to name a government-funded project, and they will be sure to deliver with the most ridiculous options. 

The Nashville Department of Transportation announced a naming contest for the city's new bikeways sweeper in May after pictures of the miniature sweeper and its bright yellow mustache-like brushes caught residents' attention on social media.

More than 700 people submitted names.

The sweeper is a part of Metro's ongoing effort to make Nashville streets more bike-friendly. NDOT hopes to launch the bike sweeper program later this month.

Nashville residents can vote for their favorite pick from the top four names selected by NDOT starting Friday. 

The Tennessean asked for all 730 submissions by public records request. 

Here are The Tennessean's favorite submissions, including some names that were swept under the rug.

There were no shortage of puns on this list. Whether it was puns of famous people's names, well-known places or a play on song lyrics, this list ran the gamut. 

We have the internet phenomenon "Boaty McBoatface" to thank for this category. Honestly, what did the Nashville Department of Transportation expect would happen? 

Several submissions called back to Nashville's sights, sounds and adopted moniker— "Music City."

Some people took their inspiration from cartoons or other beloved characters.
