AUSTIN, Texas — As the record-breaking heat continues to rage across the Lone Star State, Austin Resource Recovery (ARR) is asking its customers to set out their bins no later than 5:30 a.m. on their scheduled collection day. This is for the safety of operators, or sanitation drivers, as they collect recycling, compost, trash, large brush and bulk items an hour earlier to avoid working during the hottest times of the day.

“Actions like this allow ARR to continue to provide a safe working environment for its employees while delivering award-winning service to its more than 200,000 customers,” said Austin Resource Recovery Director Ken Snipes. “We thank our operators for their hard work and our customers for making this necessary adjustment to protect our employees.”

In addition to the adjusted times, ARR is also requiring its operators to take two to four breaks daily. These breaks, or stand-downs, give drivers 15 minutes to rehydrate and rest in a cool place before continuing with their route. Stand-downs are required to take place at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. if the driver is still collecting. The City of Austin’s no idling policy has been suspended during this hot season to allow the drivers to cool off in their vehicles.

ARR employees are required to take heat awareness training ahead of the hot months. Supervisors may also distribute electrolytes, water and water-activated cooling apparel during periods of extreme heat.

These time adjustments will last throughout summer.
